Cessnock City Council Tree Removal

Do you know that Cessnock City Council has very specific guidelines for residential and rural property owners?

To avoid penalty, it's important to be aware of the rules.

You must seek approval to remove or prune trees and vegetation in urban zones where the tree or vegetation:

  • is located in urban zone within the Development Control Plan(PDF, 141MB)
  • has a height of more than 3 metres
  • has a crown spread more than 3 metres
  • has a trunk that is located further than 3 metres from a lawful existing structure (DA Approved Structure)
  • isn’t located in a 10/50 Vegetation Clearing.
  • isn’t dead or dying or pose a threat to human life or property (conditions apply)
  • is in a declared Ecological Endangered Community
  • is not approved under the conditions of a development application

Special approval conditions apply to Native Vegetation under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

These rules often change, so we suggest you contact the Council and check the rulings for your zoning. Contact council on 02 4993 4100. You should check if you are in the RFS 10/50 zoning as well.

Arborist

Before you fire up the chainsaw or clippers and attack your tree, getting a professional Arborist to look at it could save your tree, and save you some money.

Tree Removal

Trees are an essential part of nature. However, there are times when they can be a hazard to you, your family or your home. If your tree is dead or dying, or is in a dangerous location, tree removal may be the best option.

Stump Grinding

Tree removal is not the whole job, the remaining trunk requires a process called stump grinding. Tree removal and stump grinding often combine to completely remove unsightly stumps which are an eyesore and can be a hazard to you and your family.

Why should I use an arborist?

Tree removal can be a dangerous and expensive process.

Hiring an arborist to assess the tree or plant can save you time, hassle and money.

Here's some of the main reasons you should get professional advice before starting tree removal:

  • When your tree is dead or dying.
  • The tree is presenting an unacceptable risk.
  • It is causing an obstruction.
  • It is crowding other trees.
  • The tree is located in an area where there's new construction.

What does an Arborist do?

Arborists are professionals who give advice on plants and trees. They ensure your trees are healthy and safe. An experienced arborist will consider where trees are positioned, assess the surrounding area, and advise how to maximise their health. They also understand tree species and how they react to different types of pruning.

Do you really need an Arborist?

An Arborist, also known as an tree specialist, is a qualified professional who specialises in the care and health of trees. An arborist is trained to understand what trees require to be healthy.

Here are five benefits of hiring an arborist to ensure your plants and trees maintain their health.

Tree Planting

As a tree specialist, an arborist knows the right time to plant trees and the best planting conditions. They understand the benefits of lighting, growing space, soil type and depth, which can affect the growth of the various tree species. They also know the best planting techniques for a healthy tree.

Pruning

A certified arborist knows how to correctly prune your trees. It is easy to damage your trees if you don't understand how to treat the different varieties.

Pruning a tree is done to:

  • improve their general health and appearance.
  • Shape the structure of the tree
  • Remove branches and limbs that are diseased, dead or weak
  • To train young trees to develop a good structure

Proper Tree Care and Maintenance

For your trees to grow and remain healthy they need to be properly cared for. An arborist is best to care for trees since they know how to identify a diseased tree, how to give a proper diagnosis and what correct measures are required. An arborist will also advise you on what preventive measures are necessary to protect your trees from insects, diseases and fertilisation.

Tree Removal

When you are ready to remove your tree but you are unsure, an arborist can do a risk assessment and advise the best solution. If it is necessary to remove the tree the arborist will safely fell and remove the tree and dispose of it.

In Case of a Tree Emergency

Tree emergencies are rare, but it does happen. Tree emergencies can occur during bad weather and storms where trees fall on buildings, cars or power lines. This can be very dangerous and in many cases, you need an arborist on-site to control the situation in order to prevent further damage to people and property.

Whether you are planting trees on a commercial property or at home, it is good practice to engage the services of a professional arborist. An arborist will give you expert guidance during tree planting, pruning and removal time. You will also need the services in case of tree emergencies.

It is important to use an arborist whenever working with trees.
