What is Tree Pruning?

As Autumn approaches, leaves start to fall from your trees.

Branches which were covered in a canopy of dense foliage become visible. Many gardeners would rather never deal with the falling leaves and the ness they make. At Kaptol Tree Removal and Maintenance, our arborists relish this period as an opportunity to inspect each tree canopy.

We carefully make note of any branches which may need to be removed from the trees.

It is good practice to develop a plan for pruning and trimming your trees to take advantage of these dormant months.

Why is it important to prune your Trees?

Tree branches are pruned for a variety of reasons, they will all result in a better looking and healthier tree.

Trees do grow quite naturally without pruning, however regular maintenance allows your trees to reach their full potential and live a long life.

Before you learn how to trim a tree properly, it's important to understand why you should trim a tree.

Pruning dead, dying and diseased branches, branches that rub together and any branch stubs will ensure the entire tree continues to grow in a healthy way.

The main benefit of opening up the canopy and letting light and air filter throughout the entire tree allows for increased foliage while decreasing the risk of disease.

Ground suckers and water sprouts weaken the wood and suck nutrients from the main part of the tree. Pruning helps the tree to establish one main trunk and a dominant canopy. This creates a strong tree that will more easily withstand winter storms and high winds.

Pruning and trimming trees regularly will promote fruiting and flowering, help shape plants into specific forms and control plant size.

Regular landscape maintenance and appearance pruning will combine to create healthy plants and improve the look of your property

.

Safety is a very good reason to prune your trees.

Maintaining a safe environment for your family and friends is essential, and pruning the trees in your yard helps create a safe place for your family to enjoy.

There is no doubt that well-pruned trees are stronger and healthier. Dead branches, diseased trees and weak limbs are all a danger to people and property. When pruning trees, take a moment to assess if tree branches are becoming too close to safety lights, electrical lines or are blocking traffic views.

When is the Best Time of Year to Prune Trees?

We say, there is never a wrong time to remove dead, damaged or diseased branches.

Most trees benefit from pruning in mid to late winter.

Pruning during the dormant period will encourage new growth when the warmer weather arrives.

During autumn, as the leaves fall, you can easily identify branches and limbs which require removal.

Something you may experience is that some trees can bleed sap when pruned during late winter. This is not something to worry about though, the sap will stop flowing as soon as the tree begins to put on leaves.

We suggest you make your pruning plan during Autumn, but wait a few months before you start to actually prune.

Some types of diseases may occur if you prune too early in Autumn. If you experience a warm Autumn, pruning too early can even encourage new growth which will be damaged when temperatures drop.

Pruning trees in summer is not an ideal option, however, if you are careful and you understand your plants well, it can sometimes be beneficial to further growth.

If you are an experienced gardener you can use summer pruning to direct growth by slowing down the development of a tree or branch. The best timing for this form of pruning is just after the seasonal growth has reached its peak. By removing the total leaf surface of the plant, you reduce the amount of nutrients sent to the roots and the overall growth of the tree.
